Guest Lecture 11-09-08
I was undecided if I would exit my comfy bed to head into uni today, but I decided that I really should go, as I'm not going to learn anything from lying around. And am I glad I did make the journey in. We had a guest lecturer today: Neil Everist from McGlashan Everist Architects + Master planners.

He presented a lecture on his involvement with the Geelong College Master Plan. It was great to get an insight into how planning goes in the real world.

He spoke about rating the existing buildings on their adaptability, purpose and durability. Each building was given a score out of 20, with anything below 10 pretty much free gain.

Neil went on to discuss how a site relates to the community, as well as transport and what is going on in other areas, as far away as Melbourne and beyond.

During the Q+A session, Neil listed his most important master planning issues:
  • Education : understanding your client, and looking to the future
  • Site context : especially in relation to the community; where are the children coming from?
  • Site : establish spaces; consider solar gain and shelter; how will people move around the site? social interaction, exercise??
He also listed things to consider:
  • Enrollment analysis
  • Estimate enrollment projection
  • Building analysis
  • Space occupancy analysis
  • Wider planning opportunities
  • Future developments
  • Student control (capping enrollments)
  • Maintain close contact with your client
The most important thing, however, is to KNOW YOUR SITE.

I found his insight to master planning very rewarding and inspiring. Neil was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour, being able to laugh at himself made it quite enjoyable. It was certainly a lecture worth getting out of bed for.
